Bullies have taken to the new medium of cyberspace. They use e-mail, social networking sites, chat rooms, websites, cellphones, and other electronic communications tools to harrass, torment, and even threaten other peers. Over 42% of children have reported being the victim of cyberbullying. Trouble in school, depression, and suicide in extreme cases have been known to happen to victims of cyberbullies. This wiki is the companion notes for my presentation on cyberbullying. Here you will find links to more resources to learn more about cyberbullying and how to limit its impact on children. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments about my presentation or this wiki.

The Megan's Pledge
The Megan's Pledge was started by a New Jersey chapter of Teen Angels, a youth group that promotes online safety. The idea is for schools to take some time to focus on preventing cyberbullying by informing students of what it is, its effects, and what can be done to stop it. Students each sign a pledge promising to not engage in cyberbullying. Schools will have banners students also sign as supporting the effort to stop cyberbullying. Students who sign the Megan's Pledge will wear black and white polka-dot ribbons as a sign of commitment to not engage in cyberbullying. Here are some resouces for the Megan's Pledge activity courtesy of Parry Aftab of stopcyberbullying.org and wiredsafety.org. For more information please e-mail Parry Aftab parry@aftab.com.
